RESEARCH PROPOSAL A STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF ORGANISED GROCERY RETAIL ON SMALL RETAILERS AT CHENNAI CITY INTRODUCTION There is a tremendous scope for India’s retail growth. — Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries Limited Organized corporate retailing is poised to become the business of the decade in India. With 30% of the population under 30 years, consumerism has become the mantra of India’s youth. With that said, India’s retail sector is already transforming the lives of urban Indians. It is only a matter of time to reach the remote corners of the country. Indian retail industry is growing at an alarmingly high growth rate and does not seem to slow down even in this recession. NEED FOR THE STUDY Retail is currently the booming sector of the Indian economy. This trend is expected to continue for at least the next two-three decades, attracting huge attention from all quarters of the economy—entrepreneurs, business heads, investors as well as real estate owners and builders. Retail sector is also expected to create huge employment as it will expand across the country at a massive scale. As organized retail presents enormous business opportunities, big names such as Wall-mart, Birlas and Tatas along with the foreign supermarket chains (in partnership with Indian companies), have been making an entry into this sector. Food and grocery is the second-largest segment of the retail industry and also it is the least organized. According to a recent report by Ernst Young, food and grocery account for almost 54% (USD 152 billion) of the total Indian annual retail business. However, food retail continues to be dominated by small local stores in the unorganized sector. The organized food retail sector is expected to grow by 30% to become worth US$ 2.4 billion in 2010. Fearing loss of business and employment, traders and hawkers have held large-scale protests in various parts of the country.
